
Experts at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital spoke on How to protect the eyes of rheumatoid patients from corneal ulcers?
A one day high level Continuing Medical Education (C.M.E.) Program 'Cornea 360° 2.0' was organized on Sunday by the Ophthalmology Department of Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. The objective of the program was to spread awareness on corneal complications in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and to shed light on the prevention of the disease.
Ophthalmologists from reputed institutions participated in the program under the aegis of Uttarakhand State Ophthalmological Society (UKSOS). The experts shared detailed information on the eye complications of rheumatoid patients, especially the diagnosis and treatment of serious corneal diseases. They also gave useful medical suggestions to protect the eyes and cornea from the disease. Chairman, Shri Mahant Devendra Das Ji Maharaj, congratulated and showered his divine blessings over the organizers and appreciated this effort of medical education.
This conference organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital provided a useful platform for experts to discuss among themselves and get acquainted with new medical advancements.
In the prestigious event organized at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences, Dehradun, senior eye specialists and scholars of the medical field discussed in detail the complications related to eye diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis. The event was organized under the aegis of UKSOS (Uttarakhand State Ophthalmological Society). The organizing committee comprised Dr. Rajesh Tewari (President, UKSOS), many senior doctors like Dr. Tarannum Shakeel (Head, Department of Ophthalmology), Prof. Dr. Manoj Gupta (Director), Prof. Dr. Kumud Saklani (Vice Chancellor, SGRR University), Prof. Dr. Ashok Nayak (Principal), Prof. Dr. Anil Malik (CME Program Incharge) and Dr. Satanshu Mathur (Secretary, UKSOS) were present. On this occasion, senior eye surgeon Dr. Devesh Sharma said that patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop corneal ulcers i.e. wounds in the pupil of the eye as compared to normal people. In such cases, timely identification and treatment of ulcers is the key to saving vision. The doctors appealed to the general public to be aware of eye health and emphasized on getting regular eye checkup of rheumatoid patients.
A large number of students, researchers and doctors participated in the program. The objective of the seminar was to exchange new information in the field of ophthalmology and to promote public awareness. Dr. Bandana Yein shared her surgical experiences in emergency management of corneal perforation, which proved to be extremely useful for ophthalmologists. Throwing light on complex eye infections like infectious keratitis, Dr Ankit Sharma discussed in detail the strategies for diagnosis and treatment of severe cases. He particularly focused on situations where infection can rapidly affect vision.
Chairing the event, Prof Dr Tarannum Shakeel, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, presented an in-depth view on the clinical and microbiological aspects of infectious diseases. She informed that dry eyes are common in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, which reduces the protection of the cornea and increases the chances of infection or ulcers. She advised patients to get regular eye tests done and immediately contact an ophthalmologist in case of irritation, redness or blurred vision.
The main attraction of the program was the PG Students Quiz Competition between four prestigious medical institutions, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Doon Medical College, Himalayan Institute (Jolly Grant), and AIIMS, Rishikesh in which the participants participated with great enthusiasm. The team of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital comprising of Dr. Tanvi and Dr. Shreshtha was the winner of the quiz, Himalayan Institute (Jolly Grant) represented by Dr. Malika and Dr. Ritu Parna secured the Second Position while AIIMS, Rishikesh represented by Dr. Kirti and Dr. Amit got the Third Position. The seminar concluded with the vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Tarannum Shakeel. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all the speakers, participants, organizing committee and all the associates of the program.
