Dehradun: A major milestone has been achieved in the field of cancer treatment in Uttarakhand. Doctors at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dehradun, have successfully removed one of the largest bone tumors recorded so far in the state from a patient suffering from bone cancer (osteosarcoma), while also saving the patient’s leg. The Chairman of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Shri Mahant Devendra Das Ji Maharaj, congratulated and extended his best wishes to the team of doctors from the Cancer Surgery Department.
Senior cancer surgeon Dr. Ajit Tiwari of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital informed that the patient was suffering from a serious form of bone cancer known as osteosarcoma. After detailed investigations and multidisciplinary discussions at the hospital, the medical team decided to perform limb-salvage surgery. Due to the extremely large size of the tumor, the likelihood of amputation was very high, making the surgery exceptionally challenging.
Prior to this, the patient had consulted several major cancer hospitals, where it was conveyed that the disease had progressed extensively and surgery was not feasible, leaving chemotherapy as the only option.
Before surgery, the patient was given neoadjuvant chemotherapy under the supervision of Dr. Rachit Ahuja and Dr. Debanjan (Radiation Oncologist), which helped in controlling the disease. Subsequently, with the help of limb-preserving cancer surgery, the tumor was completely removed while safeguarding the leg.
This complex surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Ajit Kumar Tiwari (Surgical Oncologist), Dr. Shifa (Orthopedic Specialist), and Dr. Nishith Govil (Onco-Anesthetist). Following the surgery, the patient’s condition has been steadily improving. All sutures have been removed, and the patient has now begun walking independently.
Hospital administration stated that such complex surgeries reflect the growing capability of advanced cancer treatment in Uttarakhand. The doctors expressed their gratitude for the continuous guidance, blessings, and support of Param Pujya Shri Mahant Devendra Das Ji Maharaj, Hon’ble Chairman of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. This case is being regarded as a significant milestone in the field of limb-preserving bone cancer surgery in Uttarakhand and serves as a new ray of hope for patients battling severe bone cancer.
