Emphasising awareness as one of the most effective weapons in the fight against cancer, the message “Cancer Will Lose, Life Will Win” resonated at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital on Friday. A Blood Cancer Awareness Programme was organised by the Department of Medical Oncology, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, where doctors provided detailed information about the symptoms of blood cancer, timely diagnosis, modern treatment, prevention and the ways to overcome fear associated with cancer.
Awareness was also promoted through poster and slogan competitions. In the poster competition, Shabina and Shoaib jointly secured the first position, Pratibha Nautiyal stood second, and Rashmi secured third position. In the slogan competition, Kalpana won the first position, Vaishali stood second and Bharti secured third position.
The programme, held at the auditorium of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Neelkamal Kumar, Director and Head, Breast and Thyroid Cancer Surgery, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital; Dr. Utkarsh Sharma, Principal, Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences; Dr. Anil Malik, Chief Medical Superintendent, Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital; and Dr. Nishant Sinha, Senior Oncologist, by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Prof. Dr. Neelkamal Kumar, Director and Head, Breast and Thyroid Cancer Surgery, said that cancer often creates fear, and this fear stems largely from a lack of awareness. As soon as a person hears the word “cancer”, anxiety and fear arise in the mind. Therefore, awareness about cancer is extremely important. He said that cancer survivors and cancer warriors have a particularly important role to play in this regard. When they share their struggles, treatment experiences, challenges and journey towards recovery, the encouragement received by patients and their families is often far greater than that provided by any lecture.
He said that during the cancer treatment journey, support from family, friends and doctors is extremely important, particularly during periods of stress and emotional difficulty. Such support plays a significant role in strengthening patients emotionally and helping them cope with the challenges of treatment. At Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, along with medical treatment, special emphasis is also placed on providing emotional and social support to patients.
Prof. Dr. Neelkamal Kumar said that making cancer treatment available at affordable rates close to patients’ homes and ensuring access to cancer care for people from all sections of society are among the priorities of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. He added that rehabilitation of cancer survivors and helping them reconnect with the mainstream of society in a dignified and meaningful manner is also an important part of cancer care. He said, “Cancer is not merely a disease that needs to be treated; it is a journey in which the patient requires continuous support, encouragement and compassionate care.”
Dr. Utkarsh Sharma said that increasing awareness about blood cancer is the need of the hour. Modern medical science has made continuous progress in the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers. If the disease is detected at an early stage, the treatment approach can be planned more effectively.
Senior Oncologist Dr. Nishant Sinha provided detailed information about various types of blood cancer, their symptoms, diagnostic procedures and modern treatment methods. He shared medical insights on Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Paediatric ALL, bone marrow transplantation and multiple myeloma, among other topics. He stressed that symptoms of blood cancer should not be ignored and timely consultation with a specialist is essential.
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Anil Malik, Dr. Seema Acharya, Dr. Meenu Gupta, HOD, Radiation Oncology, and Senior Cancer Surgeon Dr. Ajit Tiwari also shared their views on important aspects of cancer awareness, treatment and the overall well-being of patients.
During the programme, students of the School of Yoga & Naturopathy, Shri Guru Ram Rai University, demonstrated yoga practices and conveyed the message of a healthy lifestyle and health preservation. Cancer survivors shared their experiences and said that positive thinking, family support and trust in doctors are extremely important during the illness. Their experiences emotionally inspired the participants.
With the objective of taking the message of blood cancer awareness to the masses through creative means, the poster competition saw Shabina and Shoaib jointly securing first position, Pratibha Nautiyal second and Rashmi third. In the slogan competition, Kalpana secured first position, Vaishali second and Bharti third.
At the conclusion of the programme, doctors, nursing staff, university students and employees from various departments of the hospital pledged to spread awareness about cancer with the message: “Cancer Will Lose, Life Will Win.”
