On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Department of Gynae Cancer Surgery at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences (SGRRIM&HS), Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, organized a Women Cancer Awareness Program and a free cervical cancer screening camp. Around 50 women were educated about women’s cancers during the camp and their Pap smear tests were conducted.
Senior Gynae Oncosurgeon Dr. Yamini Kansal of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital said that cervical cancer is among those cancers that can be effectively prevented, yet it remains the second most common cancer among women in India. In the country, approximately one woman dies every eight minutes due to cervical cancer. She explained that infection with high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of this disease.
According to Dr. Kansal, administering the HPV vaccine between the ages of 9 and 25 years can reduce the risk of cervical cancer by about 88 to 90 percent. Women above 30 years of age should regularly undergo Pap smear or HPV tests so that early symptoms of cancer can be detected in time.
She further said that due to modern lifestyle changes, cases of uterine and breast cancer are also increasing. Obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity, and an unhealthy lifestyle are among the major reasons. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and undergoing periodic health check-ups are extremely important.
She advised women not to ignore symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or sudden weight loss. If such symptoms persist for more than two weeks, immediate medical consultation is necessary.
Dr. Kansal emphasized that awareness, timely screening, and preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of women’s cancers. On the occasion of Women’s Day, she appealed to all women to remain aware about their health and undergo regular health check-ups.
