• Chairman of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Shri Mahant Devendra Das Ji Maharaj, congratulated the entire Cardiology team
The first advanced cardiac procedure of Mitral Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) was successfully performed at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dehradun. The Department of Cardiology at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital is known for performing advanced cardiac procedures using modern technologies. With the successful treatment of a patient through the Mitral TEER procedure, another significant achievement has been added to the department’s accomplishments. Chairman of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Shri Mahant Devendra Das Ji Maharaj, extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the entire Cardiology team on this achievement.
Providing details, Prof. Dr. Tanuj Bhatia, Professor and Head, Department of Cardiology, said that in a significant achievement in the field of advanced cardiac care in Uttarakhand, the Department of Cardiology at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences and Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dehradun, has successfully performed the first Mitral Valve Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) procedure.
Following the advanced cardiac procedure, the patient recovered rapidly and was discharged from the hospital after treatment. Mitral TEER is a minimally invasive, catheter-based treatment technique used for selected patients suffering from severe mitral regurgitation, particularly those who may be at higher risk from conventional open-heart surgery. During the procedure, a specialized clip-based system is used to bring the leaflets of the mitral valve closer together, thereby reducing mitral regurgitation without the need for open-heart surgery.
The procedure was successfully performed under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Tanuj Bhatia, Professor and Head, Department of Cardiology, and Dr. Ashok Jayant, Head, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS). The procedure was carried out through the coordinated efforts of the Structural Heart Team, Cardiac Anaesthesia, Echocardiography, Cath Lab, Nursing and Technical teams.

Prof. Dr. Tanuj Bhatia informed that with this successful procedure, the Structural Heart Disease Programme at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital has been significantly expanded. Along with the advanced structural heart procedures already available at the hospital, transcatheter intervention for mitral valve disease has now been added to the range of facilities.
The SGRR Department of Cardiology has continuously expanded its interventional capabilities over the years. The department has two cardiac catheterization laboratories and advanced facilities including intracoronary imaging with IVUS, OCT and NIRS, coronary physiology, complex coronary interventions, and transcatheter valve interventions.
The department has also expanded its academic and training programmes. In 2026, the number of DM Cardiology seats has been increased to six, further strengthening its role in advanced cardiac care, education and training.
